So as time passes by, I had to give up on the 12 challenges. In fact, University and societies keep me very busy. Anyway, being abroad more than one year is a bit disappointing... Actually the first year, you discover the country, the people and share an amazing year with Erasmus students, party all the the time...

But then when you start a new year at the same place, all your friends are gone (Erasmus, Exchanged Students or graduates...). And it is the time for you to rebuild again... but you are not in the same mood as you were when you freshly arrived. And everything is just starting to be a routine.

One way to get out of this routine is to change your habits with your experience. This is the reason I am part of the Erasmus Society Team this year. We are organizing a weekly pub night, parties, visits and trips for the new Erasmus Students.

Coming to some more exciting news... The Pentlands Hills... Yes, we did climb the Pentlands Hills (if you check on the photo album, we have already been there in autumn 2007) in the first days of January, but this time we went to another side of them, Hillend. At this place we can also find the Midlothian Snowsports Centre. Well how is it possible to have a ski slops outside Edinburgh, even if it is snowy, the snow won't be thick and good enough for skiing?
Well it is an artificial slop but well known all over the UK.

Another important event in Scotland, is the Burns Supper to celebrate Robert Burns. Robert Burns is a 18th century Scottish poet famous for his poems and "Auld Lang Syne" sung in Ceilidh and at Hogmanay (New year's eve). It is celebrate around the Poet birthday (25th January) with traditional diner (Haggis) and traditional folk dance, ceilidh. The traditional celebration include a play to cut the haggis in old Scottish, toasts, speeches, and poem telling.

In Bonus some Picture of Edinburgh.

FRENCH VERSION COMING SOON

Back on Track !

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; For you, I have been to the Loch Lomond, one of the most scenic lakes in Scotland. This lake is the largest (Surface) in the UK; it is 24 miles long and 5 miles wide. I was lucky enough to have a sunny clear sky autumn weather. Actually, meadows, hills covered by high grass, mountains, and Trees in their yellow autumn leaf coat offer a wonderful color mixture by reflecting on the calm loch water surface.

Other than that, my new challenge, apart from finishing my school year and graduating, is to draw up a list of 12 things I need to do before leaving Scotland; I plan to put this list in the next post.

Enjoy the pictures and if you feel you are lost in thought of wonderful landscapes…just stop thinking and come to visit Scotland, I will see you soon…

kkbb

Mike

Revenge on B.A.B.

Bonne nuit...

There are so many times in a life we are dying for putting down our heart on the table and letting it drain itself. But constraint even if it is hurting, still easier. Then some free themselves by practising intense physical activities, others would rather prime lyrical arts. Live with our secret can be compared to a drug addiction that we never really succeed to satisfy. Writing is one of these freeing and also alienating means. So in spite of we have been finally able to speak and to break free, the writing desire remains. Then we ask ourselves am I addicted to writing because it frees my mind or I write because I am an addicted?
Good night...

This article is completely out of purpose but I had to publish it.
Il est proposé par lol Corp. / It is suggested by lol Corp.

The dog barks, the caravan passes on and Bader runs after.

Bader knows the efficient work, he works like a LIFO stack last in, first out.

Whatever you argue, Bader will always be right, it is his birth right.

Bader n’a jamais compté jusqu’à l’infini il laisse ça à Chuck Norris.

Bader has never count to infinite, he leaves this challenge to Chuck Norris.

Bader is not a Windows Addict, he uses msn via Linux.

Bader is never late, it is the delay that is Bader.

Bader doesn't need to practice sport to stay fit, his secret: run after delay.

I was in the train for already four hours when I heard a strong Scottish accent from behind. I can tell you, that was the first time I was that happy to hear Scottish speaking. 10 minutes before arriving, I was very excited, I was coming back to Edinburgh for the week-end, this city where I spent 9 months studying, practising my English, socialising around, partying, clubbing, visiting, walking, hiking, cycling, running, climbing, shopping, fighting against prices at the supermarkets and against the wind outside, improving my Scottish culture knowledge and other ...ing I could have forgot. 11:30 pm, Finally I arrived at Edinburgh Waverley Station, I was so glad to be back, that I walked down Princes Street in the wind. When I entered the flat, I just switched the hall light on and faced this marvellous banner my friends Sara, Agueda and Philipp made for me.
It's so good to be home.

Mike in Reading

I am at the moment taking a three months gap away from Edinburgh. I am doing a placement in the Berkshire, in Reading a beautiful and calm city in the western countryside suburb of London.
Reading is famous for its universities, but also for the three Bs Bricks - Beers and Biscuits (Huntley & Palmers). But I was told that the brewery closed a couple of years ago and so did the brick factory. Now it is becoming a more and more attractive place for service companies thanks to the estate which is very high but still affordable for them.

Because France ... is France !

A few days ago I was debating with a friend who loves England my preference for France. No offence if you live in the UK. British people seem to be very well organized and observant. Gardens are square, lights for pedestrians turn green when no car can appear at top speed from nowhere and travellers queue at the bus stop. In France and Especially in Paris, everything is made of nuances, and poetry. When you venture in a street in Paris you never know where you will arrived... but it we'll certainly be a nice surprise. People play music everywhere in the metro, the corridors, the street, the bridges, the Seine peers... If you are not fascinated in front of the different accademic, contemporary or modern artworks (http://www.denisdonikian.com/) Paris keeps safely in its museums. You have so different places to visit... Why France has always been lusted after by invaders? It's the Western Europe crossroad: from North to South and from East to West, local cultures are so different, every region has its own past, dialect and culture. The wealth of France also come from people who has come from all over the world to find haven there, and has brought with them their culture, their knowledge and their language. And Ask anybody there where he or she is from, you will be surprised that the answer will be in general: France. France is all of that and I won't leave it, it will always be "home".

Auld Lang Syne

For those who have the opportunity to go abroad in an Erasmus or any other exchange program, I would like to say do not hesitate. It is the most rewarding experience, an experience you can only do once and an atmosphere you can't find anywhere else. I have met such great people from all around the world. And it is so unfair to see them go little by little when you stay there. But it is a chance somehow to stay, because Erasmus program is a constant flow. When students return they country new ones come. So for all the amazing people I have met I would like to address them an "Auld Lang Syne" (Scottish song written by Robert Burns which refers to the long friendship). Nice to meet you Krikor (Armenia), Magdalena (Austria), Sophie and Céline (Belgium), Rossella (Italy), Esther(France), Nils (Germany), Andrea (Germany)...

Six Characters in Search of an Author

"Do you know who you are ?" This play from a famous Italian author Luigi Pirandello was very well performed last night at the Lyceum theatre. A group of actors were starting to rehearse when a family of six people arrived on the stage coming from nowhere and asking to perform. In the first time, the sceptic director was thinking of a joke and got crazy and furious. Their engagement and their determination while playing convinced the director step by step. And the play from there turned beyond understanding for the group of actors, what is real, what is not, and then deep questions about identity, the key according to me of the play. We really enjoyed the performance.

Vengaboys are coming to Edinburgh

You may know Vengaboys thanks to there famous tunes: "Boom boom boom boom", "Shalalala", "We're going to Ibiza". That's now three weeks little boy Mike came back to his dear rainy Scotland ! Yes now the weather is just awful it's raining every day and very frozenly windy.
But we had time to visit a very nice chapel outside Edinburgh !
Come on it's not that awful, it's art ! the builder wanted to link medieval architecture to modern metallic style... Actually this chapel was build in the XV century and they recently added this metallic roof to protect the chapel one from the wind. It's very well decorated inside but cameras are forbidden inside so just have a look on this link...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosslyn_Chapel

It’s a very dangerous place, some hikers die each year. We started from nine meters with rocky paths. We arrived to a Loch with green grassland. As one goes along paths become more and more slippery because of the spring water flowing across rocks which started to freeze. Not far from the summit, it was snowing and more and more freezing. At the top, we couldn’t stay because it was snowy, windy and fogy. It was impossible to see forward ten meters (if we didn’t stick with the path, we could have fallen with the numerous cliffs around). The temperature was -11°C. There the weather changes a lot. We went down with the rain. It was more dangerous but we made it!

Trip in The Highlands (Day 3)

The Isle of Skye

In the night (around 7.00 pm), we crossed the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh which joins the Isle of Skye to Scotland. In the darkness, we couldn’t see anything but our cautious driver drove us slowly through countryside one way roads to Portnalong, the village where we supposed to sleepover. Arrived there, at Skyewalker Hostel, we met a very easy going and kind host. Our evening there was the best of our trip. After another great meal, we staid in the living room with the others travelers (they were all about our age and mostly were German). Our host with his family played traditional music and sang along. Later in the night, they invited us for a whisky and to sing with them. The atmosphere was very good and friendly. As well that in our ten bed room, I snorted. One of the German girls was so bothered that Nils turned me to reduce the noise.

MacLeod’s Maidens

The Isle of Skye is just wonderful, calm, peaceful, green, and full of sheep and hairy coo (highland cow). Macleod’s Maidens is a famous place on the Isle for its cliffs and waterfalls. We parked next to a farm in the middle of nowhere to start our long walk. We crossed stone beaches, rivers, woods and moss-covered rocks landscapes. We had a break on the top of hills to savor a delicious traditional saucisson sent by my father. Yum ! Macleod’s Maidens (liter. Miam ! As every Wednesday evening at 6 pm, around two hundreds students gather at the Chaplaincy to share together the free meal. This meal is cooked by a different nationality student team every week. This time it was our turn. And thanks to the dozen of French students who were very motivated and great cooks, we made Hachi Parmentier. 30 kg of potatoes, you can imagine ! But after 4 hours cooking, we were not tired yet and give our numerous guests a bit of entertainment : French songs !

Don't miss the photo album and the video !

Thank you to François, Damien, Kevin, Thomas, Mélissa, Sarah, Charlotte, Léa, Esther, Aurélie, Lucile J.

EXAM WEEK : Please wait until next, to have more articles, come on don't be impatient !
Coming soon : The Highlands Trip Day 3 & 4; Boots, a sandwich with your paracetamol ?;Day goes by... so quickly !...

Trip in The Highlands (Day 2)

Loch Ness

After a difficult awakening at 7.30 am, a cold shower and a good breakfast we were on the road again. This time the destination was Loch Ness. Arrived there, the weather was not with us, rain and fog! I love Scotland! But actually it gave to the Loch more mystery. Around the Loch (lake in Gaelic), they are many shops, exhibitions and museums (it's a very touristy place) about the Loch Ness and especially the myth of Nessie (Some scientists did research on it ! crazy !).

We took a boat trip and the visit of Urquhart Castle, a very interesting castle which was the prey of several battle since the Pictish times.

Bonus Castle / Château Bonus : Eilean Donan Castle

This castle which is a very famous one was on our road.

Next : the Isle of Skye

MSN keeps you in touch ! Enjoy it !

A little article written in live ! Before starting, just a little tip, don't leave an "Iceberg lettuce" at the bottom of the fridge, mine was found "icy".

When you are far away from your family, your friends, your colleagues, MSN (instant messengering service) could be very useful. But according my own experience, it's a time-eater, a real waste of time, after some chats an half-hour went by, and if as me you have the chance to talk to old classmates, I'm not talking about simple classmates but the real cracker team, you are sure to forecast your next expenses when they make you promise a round of drinks for your return to home country ! You friends love you !

More seriously, MSN or other instant messengering software used moderately, could be a very interesting socialising tool. Coming soon, the second day of the trip in The Highlands.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://dnkinscotland.blogspot.com/2007/11/msn-keeps-you-in-touch-enjoy-it.html' title='MSN keeps you in touch ! Its name means in Gaelic “between two rivers” (location of Pitlochry). We tried some different whiskies before the tour in which we had another tasting of the 10 years old pure malt. The success of the distillery come from the old craft way of making whiskey, the use of sherry casks which give the color and 60% of the taste. Some used French and Spanish wine casks are also use to make whisky. By the way, France is the first for whisky’s importations from Scotland, well done France!

Hydroelectric Power Station

Pitlochry attract tourist too thanks to its dam and its famous fish ladder.

Queen’s view

This place which has an exceptional panorama cost us £1 for parking.

A suivre…

Trip in The Highlands (Intro)

From Friday 9/11 morning to Monday 12/11 night, we'll go with backbags and hiking shoes, Philipp, Nils, Jonas, Eduardo and myself to adventure in the Highlands (Perth, Inverness, Loch Ness, Isle of Skye, Fort Williams and Ben Nevis). British are very fancy of pies, but let me tell you about this special one. At the first sight on supermarket shelves, it's look like a tasty ordinary pie. But it's more than that...

Nils and me after talking about it during two weeks, we finally decided to try it. After 20 minutes in the oven our "surprise-meal" was ready to be tried. Armed with forks and knives we start bravely to cut a square root centimetre of the pie. Actually the pie was divided into two layers, one was the pie, the other was pieces of meat. As meat was very astonishing we most of the time mixed it with the pie. After sometimes you start to be use to the flavour, just smile and think about what you would rather have for the next dinner, it's a small tip in case somebody "wine and dine" you. Like us keep smiling !

Our experience wasn't very tasty, but Eduardo who ate a real home-made one was very impressed.

further informations on Steak Pie : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steak_pie

A little preview of Scotland Hills and Beaches / Un premier aperçu des Hautes Terres et des plages d'Ecosse

I just finished to add pictures about Pentland Hills (Edinburgh outsquirt) and Portobello Beach (Edinburgh). On Tuesday, I went to some French friends flat for dinner. Charlotte cooked for us a wonderful "tartiflette" that I could never forget (potatoes, thinly sliced bacon, reblochon cheese...) with salad and french white wine. This dinner wasn't only marvellous thanks to the meal but also thanks to a french dinner atmosphere. You can be far away from your country, you'll miss it even more. Thank you Charlotte and Mélissa.

Student, now you have to cook

One thing I regret first when I went out family’s home is my mother’s meals. So first you try save money by purchasing the less expensive food and it’s all a strategy to get the best prices. But after one or two weeks eating a kind of pasta which doesn’t have any taste, you would also regret real good meals. So if that happen, just get some recipes on Internet and never try to save money on food (“You buy something cheap, you buy something twice”). That’s true every time I have bought some cheap food it began to be uneatable before the “Best before Date”. The last point is that whatever you will save, we can’t play with our health. So the first time I just try to improvise myself but without real success. Then I tried the recipes on Internet like the Chili Con Carne and that was very great. Then I got luckier I receive a recipe book from my mum, thank you mum! Lastly I made boiled potatoes with smelted mozzarella, basilic sauce and pancetta, or a chicken soup with vegetables. Two things when you cook for yourself:
Don’t be afraid to cook too much. You can make a meal for 3 or 4 persons if you are alone just keep it in a Tupperware. For example, I made last week 800gr of tzatziki salad, but I ate it in 5 days.

The other point is, don’t be afraid to buy too much meat, you can keep it in the freezer. For example, last week, I bought a whole chicken which is less expensive than buying only three fillets. I cut wings and legs and froze them. The rest of chicken was for the soup.

Pictures available trough the "Photos" link.

International Friendship

I take a little time to introduce you to my friends, my team here. Well, I'm now settled, and have begun classes for 4 weeks now. My timetable is pretty light, but actually, it's worst than in France, because you have to learn a lot by yourself, and it's not that easy. For instance, I was taught today a fantastic 45 minute lesson on Parallelism in code development (Computer Science). But what about testing on the machines during a tutorial ? I was just told to try it by myself on computer labs. Nice ! So just add 2 or 3 hours working and understanding on this... My timetable with the other modules could be very full at the end of the week...
